Summary

All entities nearby have an awareness 'score', which determines what you can see in Detect mode. For awareness scores above a certain level you get the awareness fog, and for scores above a higher level you get the whole outline + HP. Your awareness score goes up faster the noisier you are, which includes direct LOS, how many abilities you're using, how far away you are, etc. Crouching and holding still, your score is almost 0. Tosca's goggles make everyone max awareness.

Awareness Details

Players can be detected in Detect Mode at a range of 30 meters. Nonplayer entities at 150 m. However, if a player uses a noisy ability (shooting, movement abilities, etc.), then their detect range jumps up to 150 m over 3 seconds, then drains back to 30 m over 5 seconds. Audio from noisy abilities has a max range of 150 m as well, so if you hear someone you can detect them. Additionally, if you detect aggroed creatures, then there are players near them.

  • Awareness has a range of 0-1.
  • Awareness degens at a rate of approximately -0.4 /s, although when it is gained it pauses for a fraction of a second.
  • Above approximately 0.9 awareness the red silhouette turns on.
  • Below approximately 0.5 awareness it turns off.

Methods of Gaining Awareness

  • Dealing direct damage to someone maximizes their awareness score.
  • Looking at them (near reticle) increases your awareness at a rate dependent on distance and radius (angle) from reticle.
  • In Detect Mode, it works similar to looking at them, except the angle covers the entire screen, but if they are outside the parens of the Detect Mode HUD, then it cannot increase past the halfway point. If they are in the central area of the HUD, then it can increase past the halfway point such that you can resolve them into silhouettes.

Special Cases

  • Cloaking sets awareness score to 0 and sets degen to approximately -10 /s, which means the silhouette flicker from getting hit lasts 0.1 seconds.
  • Suppressors (Tosca smoke, Ajonah bubble) prevent awareness score gain from Detect Mode and sets score degen high (maybe -10/s again). It does not stop gain from being looked at or shot, though the degen counters the gain from being looked at.
